Despite being such a durable and versatile substance, concrete is not naturally waterproof. As it dries and takes its form, concrete becomes porous, which means its composition has enough space between that which makes it hard that it can absorb water and begin deterioration and staining to the concrete โ and thatโs before any kind of cracking begins in it.
There are ways of making finished concrete more resistant to water, however. Hydrophobic concrete is a type of enhanced concrete composition where the porous space of the concrete is filled in with crystalline formations, polymer formations, speck infusion, and others. Other types of water prevention for concrete can include multi-surface waterproofing (as in a product that also tries to waterproof wood and brick surfaces as well), wrapping concrete with a different, waterproof material, or simply waterproofing the area around where the concrete is supposed to go with altering drainage, coverage, etc.
