Do Cracks in My Concrete Indicate That Itโ€™s Broken?

All concrete eventually forms visible cracks, but this will not automatically indicate a problem most of the time. Concrete will form visible cracks as a result of several conditions unrelated to its structural health โ€“ from its composite mixture (which is rock, sand and potentially other elements essentially glued together with water) drying out naturally while being cured and well after being finalized and set in place to the natural stresses that the concrete will undertake in its lifespan as functional building material for you. So, yes, the weight it is taking on is technically cracking the concrete, but those cracks are entirely cosmetic.

Generally, whether or not a crack in concrete is worthy of concern has to do with how big or wide it is. Most cosmetic cracks will be pretty small and extremely fine, but if a crack is wide enough (about 1/8th of an inch) it WILL become concerning as that means it will be big enough to have water, elements, potentially even some pests compromise and damage the concrete structure. Water is a particular problem as concrete is already porous and will absorb water that can compromise its strength.
